PAST EVENTS CALENDAR

1. October 9, 2004: Habitat for Humanity. We will help to rebuild a home, which was burned down completely, in last fall's disastrous fire. The house is in Escondido. We will meet at the "H" at Helix HS at 8:00am, and work Saturday from 9am to 3pm, and be back at the "H" at 3;45pm. This was really fun last year, and there is excellent instruction by Habitat staff. They instruct us exactly what to do, safely. You meet many fine people, as well. Anthony Castanos, a Helix senior, is in charge of this project. Contact Anthony at school, or at Anthony_Castanos@hotmail.com
See photos here!

2. October 29, 2004 - La Mesa Dale Pumpkin cutting 10/28/04. Rotarians Doug Smith, John Stremlau, Bob Miller, Bill Pogue. Three Interactors from Helix High School. La Mesa Dale Staff ("Mo" and others), and 30 kids. Great Fun! See photos here!

3. Friday, November 26th, 2004: St Vincent de Paul. We will meet at the "H" at 9:15am, drive down to St Vincent (16th and Imperial) and serve the homeless a fine Thanksgiving turkey meal with all the trimmings, from 10am to 2pm. We will be back at the "H" at 2:45pm. They give us lunch. We served 600 homeless last year, 1200- the year before. There are many smiles and much gratitude expressed. It is also a lot of fun!!! This is our third year. They think a lot of Helix at St Vincent de Paul, and therefore reserved a special place for us to participate. Contact Elmore Myers, Interact President. SEE PHOTOS HERE!

3. January, 2005, Food Bank. A repeat of last year's fun time. Exact date to be obtained and posted subsequently.

4. Interact meeting is always on Thursday, room 204, at 12:47 to 1:10pm.
Come and join us!!!

If any of these things interest you, please be certain to communicate your desire to Scott Allen, your Interact Liaison from La Mesa Sunrise Rotary; hamiltonblake@cox.net. Thank you.

New Photos Posted

Sept 18 , 2004: 13 students in the Helix Interact Club, and three LMSRotarians went to Pacific Beach on "I Love A Clean San Diego" Day, and joined others in making Pacific Beach spic and span.  On this beautiful day, we even got our feet wet in the Pacific Ocean.  Afterwards, we went to Round Table Pizza in La Mesa to socialize and enjoy pizza, salad and drinks.  The students were: Elmore Myers, Keith Myers, Krisin Espanol, Ahmed Rafeh, Anthony Castanos, Rasik Desai, Joey Holman, Cierra Kindred, Chaunie Limbrick, Devin Parish, Marian Pavlovich, Steven Quach, Ermeca Richardson; Rotarians were Scott Allen, Janet Castanos, Betty Howland & Bill Pogue. Kris Irving wanted to come, but had meetings at Helix.

Activities during the 2003-2004 school year:

September 20: We joined I Love a Clean San Diego and cleaned up trash from Lake Murray. We collected a lot of junk, and left the Lake in pristine shape. An article in the Lake Murray Times featured our participation.

October 17-19: We sent three members to the Interact Symposium at Idyllwild. Kris Irving, our Faculty Liaison, went with us for this fun and informative weekend. Also there were about 200 students of other Interact Clubs from all over Southern California.

Nov 26: St Vincent de Paul. We helped to feed over 800 Thanksgiving meals to the homeless. Many grateful acknowledgements cheered the day!

Sold GLO STICKS, as a fund raiser, at Home Football games (4 of them).

December: Collected Christmas ornaments for the fire victims. Collected toys for them, too.

January 3: attended the Lost Boys of Sudan birthday party (their first), and helped the Rotarians set up and serve over 150 people there! The Lost Boys were delighted with the games, food and decor. There was a magician, balloons, piñata, Gordian knot, etc. As no records are kept in southern Sudan, the Lost Boys had never had a birth date, or a birthday party. INS listed them all as being born on January 1. We told them that they are now one year old.

January 14: we supplied and served food for the Interfaith Shelter for the homeless, in this cold time of the year.

February: we contributed $25.00 to buy the dictionaries (at $0.50 @), which will be distributed by the returning Lost Boys from the Mid City- Lost Boys Rotaract Club, to the people (refugees) in Kakuma Refugee Camp, in northern Kenya. They have been there for over 10 years, for the most part. The dictionaries are for the ESL courses there, which our Mid City Lost Boys will help to teach.

December 6: We glued decals on the storm drains in La Mesa, which tell people not to dump chemicals and waste in them, which would harm sealife. We did this for “I Love a Clean San Diego”, and were awarded T shirts with logos, and pizza for lunch.

Feb 17: Habitat for Humanity. We helped to plaster and finish dry wall in a home which is being built on van Ness street in Mid City; one of three homes in that location. Many interesting people collaborated.

March: We held a raffle for 3 hours for limosine service, donated by a La Mesa Sunrise Rotarian (we thank him). Eric Smith, a former Interactor, was the winner.

April 3-5: we promoted RYLA, and had one of our members go to this fine leadership school at Idyllwild. He reported that he had a terrific time, and the speakers were excellent. He reported, also, to La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club, who had sponsored him.

Weekly meetings are Thursdays, 12:47 p.m., room 204 in the Math Building, when school is in session.

San Diego Food Bank 4-04

JAN 11 - TREN de LOS TRES REYES
Over 5,000 gift bags were given away, the Interactors loved it, the Three Kings were there, four clowns, a band, and a lot of love across the border.

"This is the best thing for the children of Tecate to happen all year", says Rosa Espejo, wife of the Mayor of Tecate. It is also the only time the train goes all the way from Campo to Tecate, each year, at present.

April 24: Food Bank. We packed over 520 boxes of food for poor elders, along with others from various groups. We headed the line, and set the pace, and did we have fun.

Our La Mesa Rotarian treated us to pizza , salad and drinks at Round Table Pizza afterwards.

May: we will repaint the yellow, semicircular door-edge templates, on the floor outside of the classroom doors, to make them visible.

We visited La Mesa Sunrise Breakfast Club several times, addressed them, and participated in their activities. Some went to their Christmas party. We collected used glasses for their Vidaii project in San Quentin, Mexico, for which they were most appreciative.

HISTORY

Mr. Funk helped start the Helix Interact Club in 1994 along with Jennifer James and Wender Hwang (Calvin’s older brother), and had been Advisor to Interact for six years, until he became Chairperson of the Math Department. In 2003 he has left to be a member of the Cuyamaca College Faculty.  We miss him already and wish him well. Thanks Mr. Funk!

We were lucky to have Mrs. Amy Levy step in for the 2000-01 school year, and Kris Irving has given strong support as Facutly Advisor since then.  Again, we are blessed with good people.

We invite you to join us, and participate as you can. There are no dues. Officer elections are held in February.

Some of our past Co-Presidents include Deidre Gailey and Calvin Hwang Our current President is Georgette Grubb. Kris Irving is our Faculty advisor. Bill Pogue is our Liasion from the La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club.

Several other Rotarians participate in our activities, as they can get away from their work schedules. Thanks to Jeff Messenger, Marilyn Sanderson, Evie Lerner, Melissa Wilson, Eric Blackhall, Molly Nocon, Ken Patterson, and others. Bob James, Jr., a Helix graduate, does our web page – when we give him updates.

We are always invited to attend our sponsoring Rotary Club, the La Mesa Sunrise Rotary, meetings on Fridays at 7:00 a.m. at the La Mesa Community Center.
